Lilian E. Whitteker, 'Woman in a Park', Oil Painting on Canvas, c. 1937

£895.00

An oil on canvas, by Lilian E. Whitteker (1881-1979), painted c. 1937. This beautiful portrait represents an elegant woman in a blue dress, leaning on a column pedestal in a park.

The bright light and colours, alongside the fine details of her attire, stand out against an almost abstract depiction of nature, with large brushstrokes in hues of green and brown. Her expressive pose and decisive expression showcase Whitteker’s wonderful ability at capturing the individuality of her subject.

This work comes with a photograph of Mademoiselle d’Ornano in the Château de la Branchoire, on which the portrait is based, as a rare account of life during the interwar period. Signed in the bottom right hand corner and framed in a modern gilded frame with lattice patterns. This is a striking and rare example of Whitteker’s portraits.

Lilian E. Whitteker in her studio in 1968

Lilian E. Whitteker (1881-1979) was an American painter that spent most of her life in France, living in Montbazon in the Loire Valley. Born in Wyoming, Ohio, USA in 1881, she studied art in Cincinnati and Boston. After a short time in New York, she moved to France with her partner, who had just bought the Château de Montbazon. There she developed a rich social life with local artists and castle owners, but also with American artists who lived in the area, such as Alexander Calder, Jo Davidson, and Max Ernst. After the death of her partner, she moved to the Château de La Bourdaisière, where she lived and painted until her death in 1979. Her work was exhibited regularly in local galleries and museums, with a retrospective at the Beaux-Arts museum in Tours in 1963.

Her painting spans portraits, landscapes and flowers. While she was influenced by the large and energetic brushstrokes of impressionism, she never followed a single school and developed her very own sense of colour and line. The warm light and lush nature of the Loire Valley remained a strong source of inspiration throughout her work.
